Dentures

General Info on all types of dentures:

All denture treatments, in our office, should achieve the following:

  • Restore a natural appearance and help maintain the natural shape of your face by providing support for your lips and cheeks. No one else should notice that you wear a denture.
  • Enable normal speech
  • Health
  • Reasonable chewing ability and comfort relative to each patient’s adaptability

Did you know:

  • Unfortunately most dentures (made elsewhere) are made following a formula that is basically a ‘one size fits all’ approach but obviously, people’s mouths are as unique as the person it belongs to
  • Most dentures (made elsewhere) unfortunately look like a denture and have an obvious un-natural, ‘denture’ appearance
  • Although all dentures move to some degree, the stability of most dentures depends on how the bite is designed and not just how well the denture is fitted to the gum.

Complete Dentures

Complete dentures replace all of the teeth in the upper or lower or both jaws and are removed for cleaning and during sleep. Dentures have to be carefully fitted and well designed to provide natural appearance and speech, good health, reasonable chewing ability and comfort.

Implant Dentures

Implant dentures are a very significant improvement over wearing a regular denture. Implants are like anchors in the jaw bone, somewhat like the roots of natural teeth that can be used to stabilize a denture or a set of teeth. Sometimes as few as two implants result in a significantly improved denture that will stay in place, won’t tip nearly as much and will allow much harder biting and chewing. Alternatively, four to six implants can allow a set of teeth to be very solid without any tipping. Sometimes the upper denture no longer has to cover the roof of the mouth or the lower teeth can be attached only to the implants and become non-removable. Regardless, implant dentures result in a great increase in comfort, function and self-confidence.

Immediate Dentures

Immediate dentures are made before your natural teeth are removed and are fitted to your mouth during the same appointment that your natural teeth are removed.  You will obviously have to be gentle with your dentures for many weeks but you can adapt quickly for more normal appearance and speech but more slowly for eating.  As your gum and bone heals, the immediate dentures will need to be refitted or relined a few times. Because immediate dentures are made before the natural teeth are removed, the appearance and design of the denture can not be ‘tried out’ in advance.
